WHAT TO USE
- The textbook ACE names for this exam: The Exercise Professional’s Guide to Personal Training. ACE says you can use it with its online study programs to prepare.
- The ACE Certification and Recertification Handbook, free to download from acefitness.org, for the rules on earning and keeping the certification.
- The exam content outline linked above. Read it first and let it set your weekly plan.
HOW THE OUTLINE IS BUILT
The exam content outline ACE publishes divides the certification into broad role areas rather than chapter-by-chapter topics. Read the outline first — it tells you both what is covered and roughly how much of the exam each area takes, which is exactly what the weekly plan needs. The characterizations below are a study aid, not a copy of the outline itself.
Foundations of exercise science
Anatomy, physiology and the science behind training adaptations. Vocabulary-heavy; flashcards and spaced repetition are the efficient tools here.
Assessment and program design
Screening, assessing and building a progressive plan. Practice full scenarios — assessment results in, program out — because sequencing is what the exam tests.
Coaching and professional practice
Communication, behavior change, safety and the professional responsibilities of the role. Smaller weight, high value: these are the cheapest points on the exam.
Use ACE’s outline for the official area names and weights; plan from those, not from this summary.
HOW I WOULD PLAN IT
- Read ACE’s outline post first, note the areas and their weights, then check the outline’s date — it is revised roughly every five years.
- Put the weights into the study plan splitter so weekly hours track the exam, not the book’s chapter order.
- First pass over the textbook for the big picture; second pass with notes and flashcards, heaviest area first.
- Third pass: practice applying the material in full client scenarios, not isolated facts.
- Last two weeks: mock exams under time pressure, then targeted re-reading of weak areas.
GOOD TO KNOW
- ACE says it reviews and revises the exam content outline every five years. A new outline for this exam went live on 21 August 2023.
- Always check the date on the outline you are using.
- Register for the exam from your account on acefitness.org once you feel prepared.
To turn the official outline into weekly hours, use the splitter and printable files on the study guides page. For what to do on exam day itself, see the exam-day checklist. I am still working toward my own certifications (see About), so this page only points to the official sources and shares a planning method.
